fREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can you use this in my DIY body butter?
Is this organic Mica?
We at FIREDOTS are proud of our products and openly display all ingredients. Our FIREDOTS blue Cool Heat mica powder ingredients include Mica, Titanium Dioxide and Ultramarine Blue. All FIREDOTS cosmetic grade mica powders are of the highest quality and purity and comply with FDA guidelines for cosmetic products without restriction except our blue colors, Cool Heat and Indigo River. Our Cool Heat and Indigo River mica color pigments contain Ultramarine Blue and Ferric Ferrocyanide natural minerals and are not approved by the FDA for use around lip areas.
We are not aware of any true organic mica powders sold on the market. Mica powder is a natural sourced mineral from the earth. Some manufacturers sell a mica powder that is not mica powder from the earth. Its primary ingredient is Fluorphlogopite which is a synthetic material that matches the color and shape of naturally mined mica powder. We want you to know all FIREDOTS cosmetic grade mica powders are without exception, suitable for vegans and cruelty free.
How many gallons of epoxy can you get out of 100g (full container)?
For applications to use our cosmetic grade mica powder as a resin epoxy color pigment for colored resin fun, generally speaking the mica colorant powder should comprise about 2-6% by weight of the mixture to the epoxy and hardener or another easy rule is about 0.5-1 ounces of mica powder pigment to 16 ounces of epoxy resin.
A lot depends on how translucent or opaque you want it, keep adjusting the amount of epoxy pigment powder colorant added into the mixture until you achieve your desired epoxy resin color. There are about 128 fluid ounces in 1 gallon, roughly speaking to achieve a 2% by weight epoxy resin color pigment to resin, one of our FIREDOTS premium Bold Ruby Red mica pigment powders has 100grams (3.5 ounces) and will produce about 150 grams of resin, for deeper colors you may add more mica powder pigment and get less resin out, it all depends on your desired outcome.
We recommend testing your color before putting it on your end product idea as the color can change look and look darker than in a mixing bucket. Start by mixing your colors into the resin and spreading it on some scrap wood, foam or white paper to see how the color will look.
Can you mix with intercostal for car paint?
If you desire a metallic car paint with a pearlescent finish our FIREDOTS mica pigment powder colorants will work great. We don't have direct experience with the Intercostal branded car paints but in our experience mixing the FIREDOTS Bold Ruby red mica pigment powder at a ratio of 5-15% per gallon will work well for automobile paints.
We recommend testing your color project first before putting into a final project and also be sure to write down your measurements of ratios of mica pigment powder colorants used to mixing medium so you can match the color later.
Can I use this to make gilding wax?
Our FIREDOTS mica powders should work with clear carrier to make a pearlscent (shiny) effect. Really they will work in just about any carrier (lacquer, enamel, acrylic, whatever) provided it's not a solid color.
The mica powder is like a pearl and will want to sit on top of your carrier. You don't really need a lot of the powder either for your application. You might be tempted to add a lot of FIREDOTS mica powder but start with a small amount. We would recommend trying a small batch on a piece you don't care about to get the mixing consistency correct and the effect you desire.
Can you use this for candle making?
We have had many customers love the color stability of our FIREDOTS cosmetic grade mica powders as a candle dye, soap colorant, bath bomb colorant, slime pigment, and nail pigment powder.
Can you use for a DIY concrete counter top?
Yes, we have had many of our customers use our FIREDOTS Mica Powder products for concrete counter tops, epoxy floors, and other DIY projects. We recommend testing your color before doing the full project so you get the desired Pearlescent Effect. We'd love to see some of your work for using our FIREDOTS mica pigment powders for concrete countertops.
Is this mica soluble in oil or water?
Our mica pigment powder products are cosmetic grade and composed of natural minerals that are sourced using eco-friendly methods. Each mica colorant is composed of natural minerals (e.g mica, titanium dioxide and iron oxide). We have found our mica pigment powders can work well in cosmetics such as soaps, bath bombs, nail polish, and powders. We have also had great experience with the mica colorants as a epoxy resin color pigment. They mica pigment powders will require some mixing but once fully dispersed in your base (water, oil, epoxy), a little bit of mica will go a long way in adding a beautiful pop of color in your next DIY project.
